Give yourself a Makeover…

In 2016, a new norm developed that now is a household ritual for some! While others are still struggling to adopt the culture and its value, I've learned the importance of utilizing it for revitalization! Self-Care, originally caught on as a medical concept. Doctors have long discussed it as a way for patients to treat themselves and exercise healthy habits, most often under the guidance of a health professional. Prior to the late 1960s and early 1970s, these patients were usually mentally ill and elderly people who required long-term care and otherwise had little autonomy. Later, academics began to look for ways for workers in more high-risk and emotionally daunting professions; trauma therapists, social workers, EMTs, and so on to combat stress brought on by the job. The belief driving this work was that one cannot adequately take on the problems of others without taking care of oneself!

Today, self-care is beyond the professionals who take care of their patients in a trauma/ crisis situation. It's that individual who acknowledges the benefits of caring for self before others! Enjoying quiet time alone without feeling quilty because you allowed the phone to ring! Saying no to a potential great opportunity because you know it will hinder you from indulging in your weekly routine of self-care! If you have not taken time to do it! Now is the time to give yourself a Makeover! I celebrate you…. Kim Leslie-Underwood, MHC-LP, CASAC-2
